Charlton arrived at White Hart Lane on the crest of their third league victory of the season. Both sides started brightly with Charlton proving a match for Tottenham. While Charlton were still reeling from going one down Spurs struck again this time from a Teemu Tainio strike from outside the box, which was deflected through the legs of Carson.
The visitors pulled one back just before half time when Spurs old boy Andy Reid crossed for Sam who loitering at the front post. Michael Dawson was forced to intercept but could only steer the ball over Paul Robinson and in to his own goal.
Ten minutes in to the second half Tottenham’s two goal lead was restored, through Steed Malbranque. As he took Berbatov’s knock down on his chest and then fired home much to the delight of those in the Paxton Road Stand. The Frenchman was delighted to have scored his first goal for the club and was duly booked for his celebration with the Spurs supporters.
Charlton looked to have lost all their resolve which must have been sensed by Jermain Defoe who seized upon an opportunity to further the Spurs lead, striking the ball from twenty five yards in to the top corner past a distraught Scott Carson.
Carson’s day of working his back muscles was complete three minutes later as Berbatov broke down the left beating El Karkouri and then putting the ball in the far corner. He was denied the opportunity of a hatrick when he was substituted to allow Mido a run out on his return from injury.
Paul Robinson furthered the Charlton misery with a number of fantastic saves to deny them any form of consolation, as he demonstrated why he is the number one goal keeper in England.
