Spurs City Slickers Get All Three Points At Eastlands
Tottenham visited a happy hunting ground with their poorest away form for years at a time when Manchester City had not lost at home so far this season.
Spurs started well and dominated the play, they took the lead when Calum Davenport, in for Dawson, headed home a Tom Huddlestone free kick. Tottenham continued to threaten Weaver’s goal with Jermain Defoe failing to take advantage of numerous chances, including three where he had broken clear of the City defence.
Huddlestone struck a wonderful half volley from a Hossam Ghaly pass to put the visitors two up. Stuart Pearces side managed to hold the score to 2-0 until half time where he was able to inspire his side and make some tactical changes for the second half. Meanwhile his former Coventry City team mate Martin Jol was asking his side for more of the same in the second half.
The roles were reversed for the second half, with Tottenham reverting back to their previous away form not looking very threatening or solid at the back. It wasn’t long before City began to pose a threat to the Tottenham goal. Dickov broke down the left and crossed the ball for Joey Barton to volley home from six yards past a helpless Paul Robinson.
Tottenham brought Mido on for Defoe in the search for a goal to secure their first three points from an away game this season.
City had a penalty appeal denied when they thought that Joey Barton had been fouled by Steed Malbranque in the dying minutes, but the referee’s assistant kept his flag down and the ref waved play on. Spurs held on to remain unbeaten in six Sunday fixtures following European games midweek.
