Sevilla Come From Behind To Knock Barcelona Off Top Spot
Sevilla take top spot in La Liga after coming from behind to beat Barcelona 2-1 at the Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium. Barcelona took control of the game from the start, resulting in Ronaldinho heading the visitors in front on 13 minutes. The Brazilian was brought down inside the box by Aitor Ocio in the 28th minute. Ocio saw red for the foul and Ronaldinho missed the spot kick. Sevilla pulled level in the 38th minute through Kerzhakov.
Although a man down, Sevilla came out fighting in the second half. Barca seemed to have lost their way since the penalty miss and a Daniel Alves free kick in the 60th minute put Sevilla in front. The Catalans fell apart after going behind. Giuly and Zambrotta saw red cards, and with the up coming trip to Anfield in mind, Rikjaard took off Ronaldihno and Messi, allowing Eto’o to enter the fray.
Xavi almost equalised with a well taken free kick but today was not Barca’s day. Sevilla could have added to the score late on. First Fredi Kanoute missed an excellent chance, then Alves hit the woodwork.
The result throws the title race wide open. Should Real Madrid beat Getafe, the difference between first and fourth place will be reduced to four points. Barcelona will now be without both Zambrotta and Giuly for next week’s big game against Real Madrid.
