Liverpool Beat Premiership Champions Chelsea With Two First Half Strikes

This game heralded the return of Petr Cech after suffering horrific career threatening skull injury against Reading last year. He returns to an side that are ravaged by both injury and suspension, they appear to be missing captain marvellous John Terry the most as he recovers from back surgery he had at the beginning of the year.

The hapless Champions were dead and buried after just twenty minutes from the start of the match. Liverpool dominated from the beginning and were duly rewarded with a goal after just four minutes. Dirk Kuyt capitalised on the defensive frailties of makeshift centre half Ferriera and put the ball past Cech making his first task back between the posts, picking the ball out of the net.

Fifteen minutes later the Liverpool lead was doubled as Jermaine Pennant scored his first goal for the club, a thunderous strike that left Cech no chance.

Chelsea had chances to get back in to the game but Liverpool held on and could have even stretched their lead if they had taken the opportunities that Chelsea had gifted them.
