Last Minute Essien Strike Sends Chelsea Into The Champions League Semi-Final Against Liverpool Or PSV

The game started with the home side with a slight psychological advantage having scored an away goal in the first leg in Stamford Bridge. Former Liverpool striker Fernando Morientes increased the Valencia advantage just after the half hour, when he slid home Joaquin’s cross in to the Chelsea goal. For the third time in as many Champions League games Jose Mourinho’s side found themselves one-nil down.

Mourinho’s half time motivational speech had its desired impact, when within ten minutes of the restart Shevchenko helped Chelsea draw level. The Ukrainian kept his cool among the panic in the Valencia defence to convert a Michael Essien cross.

With the score at 1-1 the game looked to be headed for extra-time, that was until Michael Essien took charge of Chelsea’s destiny with a defence splitting run and a thunderous strike into Canizares near post to give Chelsea the 3-2 aggregate lead needed to take them safely in to the semi-finals where they face the winners of Liverpool and PSV.
