Italian FA Suspend Football As Match Violence At Palermo v Catania Takes Life Of Policeman
A 38 year old policeman lost his life on Friday as fans from rival Sicilian clubs fought each other. It is believed that an explosive device was thrown in to the car Inspector Filippo Raciti was in and he was rushed to hospital where he died, leaving behind his wife Marisia Grasso and two sons.
More than 100 others were injured during the riots in Catania after Palermo won the local derby. Only 30 were arrested for participating in what appeared to be an organised clash as security cameras were covered with plastic bags.
Sergio Campana president of the Italian Player Association, the Italian equivalent of the PFA, has called for a year long suspension of football to help tackle the hooliganism. A call that follows the FIGC decision to suspend League and International games that were due to take place this week. The Itailan FA have a history of handing out stiff punishments and would have no fear in banning the clubs or suspending the football indefinitely.
Catania president Antonio Pulvirenti feels he can no longer continue in his role as a result of the violence on Friday, and announced that he is to retire.
