Barcelona travelled to Anfield needing to score a minimum of two goals to progress to the next round. Barca keeper Valdes kept his team in the tie, while his counter part had little to do, although when called into action he was no match for former Chelsea striker Eidur Gudjohnsen, the substitute beat the offside trap and rounded the Liverpool keeper to put the Catalans ahead and give them a vital away goal.
