Champions League Holders Barcelona Bow Out Despite Victory Over Liverpool
Barcelona travelled to Anfield needing to score a minimum of two goals to progress to the next round. Football fans had been licking their lips for two weeks at the thought of a Barcelona onslaught of Jose Reina’s goal. They were to be disappointed, when Liverpool used their home advantage and contained Barca and missed a host of opportunities. Riise scorer of the winner at the Camp Nou could have scored two in two minutes.
Barca keeper Valdes kept his team in the tie, while his counter part had little to do, although when called into action he was no match for former Chelsea striker Eidur Gudjohnsen, the substitute beat the offside trap and rounded the Liverpool keeper to put the Catalans ahead and give them a vital away goal.
One goal was not enough for the Spanish league leaders and the former holders held on to the aggregate score of 2-2 to knock out the current holders on away goals.
