Manchester United could only manage a draw when they visited the Riverside stadium for the FA Cup clash with Middlesbrough. Boro who often raise their game when hosting the big clubs were always going to be a tough test for United after their Champions League exploits on Wednesday.

United took the lead when the Middlesbrough defence didn’t close down and advancing Wayne Rooney, allowing the striker to pick his spot and easily put the ball past Mark Schwarzer. The home side were not behind for too long when confusion in the Red Devils defence presented youngster Lee Catermole with an opportunity. Catermole controlled the ball with one touch and then volleyed it in to the United goal with his second, demonstrating excellent composure for a young player.

Boro took the lead when captain George Boateng was afforded a free header at the back post, that he directed at Kuszczak who really should have done better with his attempted save. Boateng turned from hero to villain when ten minutes after he scored he handled the ball in the box, referee Rob Styles had no option but to award United a penalty. Cristiano Ronaldo dispatched the spot kick, which Schwarzer was unable to stop despite diving in the right direction.

The result means that there will be another match for Manchester United to play in their already a congested fixture list, before they find out if they will the hat for the draw for the FA Cup Semi-Final.

In Steve McClaren’s first squad of 2007 there are a number of surprise inclusions in comparison to his last gathering. He has named twenty-eight players in the squad for the midweek friendly against Spain, expecting that some players will drop out with knocks from games over the weekend.

There are a number of players that will be doing their best to ensure that they are not injured Barton, Barry, Dyer and a Woodgate; Barton because it is his first call up to the full squad, Barry, Dyer and Woodgate will hope to shine in their first call up under McClaren having endured a while in international exile.

Newcastle United Loan United States International Oguchi Gooch Onyewu From Standard Liege

Glen Roeder has bolstered his injury-ravaged defence by adding American World Cup star known as Gooch. Onyewu will be looking to impress during his spell at the Toon in the hope of securing a permanent deal in summer.

Middlesbrough Sign South Korea Player Lee Dong Gook from Pohang Steelers

The Korean has joined Boro on an eighteen month contract. The deal involves no payment of an initial fee to Pohang Steelers by Boro, unless the player remains at the Riverside after the initial deal.

However should he move to a club in another league then both clubs will split the fee equally. This is the 27 year old’s second stint at a European club having spent time at Werder Bremen.

Charlton Appoint Pardew As Their Saviour At Christmas

Les Reed left his post as Charlton manager by mutual agreement, giving him a place in the premiership history books as the manager with the shortest tenure so far, just 41 days and eight games.
