Carling Cup: More Goals From Midfield As Spurs Beat Middlesbrough To Ease The Pressure On Jol

Jermain Defoe was back in to the starting eleven replacing Robbie Keane, leaving Paul Robinson deputising as captain. Spurs began brightly, laying siege to the on the Middlesbrough goal. Boro were without new strikers Aliadiere and Mido and looked toothless in attack.

Brad Jones In Stoppable Form

Spurs were wasteful with gilt-edged opportunities in front of goal, Jenas and Defoe coming closest to breaking the dead lock. Schwarzer’s understudy Brad Jones demonstrated form that could have the Australian keeper looking over his shoulder.

Second Half Goals & Clean Sheet The Perfect Tonic For Confidence At Spurs

The Tottenham defence still looked suspect from set pieces but they managed to hold up and keep a confidence boosting clean sheet. Gareth Bale broke the deadlock in a controversial move Aaron Lennon appeared to be in an offside position but was deemed not to be by the referee, paving the way for Bale to run round Jones before putting the ball in the goal. Crowd favourite Tom Huddlestone added the second ensuring Spurs name was entered into the hat for the draw. Huddlestone headed the ball past Jones after Lennon carved out an opportunity to cross having beaten Rochemback on the right flank.

Carling Cup: Iain Dowies Coventry Dump Manchester United Out Of The Cup As Mifsud Scores Two

For the second year in a row Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United have been put out of the Carling Cup in their first round by lower league opposition. No doubt there will be headlines calling for his head and he will join Jose Mourinho on the English football scrapheap as he has failed to make progress on last seasons performance. In fact United have got 100% worse losing by two goals this year.

Last year a Freddy Eastwood’s free-kick created the upset of the season as Southend won one-nil at Roots hall. This years upset was at the theatre of dreams, and this years hero was Michael Misfud. He scored the first just after half an hour when he slid home Michael Doyle’s low cross. Misfud nearly doubled his tally this time the supply came from Simpson.

Misfud managed to double his and Coventry’s tally when he ended a counter attack with a fierce shot that Kuszczak was unable to stop. Sending almost 12000 Sky Blue fans in to an ecstacy they haven’t felt since Gary Mabbutt’s own goal gifted them victory in the F.A. Cup twenty years ago.

Coventry and Mifsud had opportunities to increase their lead, but the fans and Dowie appeared to be content with their two goal triumph over the Premier League champions.

Euro 2008: Owen Out Of England Squad For Matches Against Estonia And Russia In October Due To Muscle Tear

Newcastle United manager Sam Allardyce has confirmed every England fans worst fear. England striker Michael Owen needs surgery to repair his most recent injury; which will see him miss the next two Euro 2008 qualifying games against Russia and Estonia.

It had been feared that Owen needed to go under the knife for a hernia injury but he was given a clean bill of health on that front only to discover that he may have to have surgery on his latest injury; a tear on his Abductor muscle.

Allardyce believes that Owen will be out at least until the Magpies play Spurs in October. The first Premier League fixture after the Euro 2008 qualifiers that is if the player does not need surgery or that date would be dragged out even longer.

UEFA CUP: Lee Regrets Campo Omission From Bolton UEFA Cup Squad

Out of favour Wanderers midfielder Ivan Campo returned to the Reebok stadium on Sunday to rescue a point against a struggling Spurs side. A point that appears to have kept manager Sammy Lee in his job for a while longer.

Bolton need all the help they can if like Tottenham they are to turn their season around, however Campo was omitted from the UEFA Cup squad after he asked to speak to other clubs following Sam Allardyce’s departure to Newcastle United.

Campo Scored The Equaliser Against Spurs

Campo (33) played his first league game of the season against Spurs and demonstrated his value to the Lancashire club contributing with the equaliser. He will not be able to make the same contribution in Europe until after the group stage and the January transfer window is over. By which stage Wanderers could have been dumped out of the competition and Campo could be playing his football in another country with another team. There a number of clubs interested in the Champions League winner although he could opt for a payday in the retirement league in Qatar.

Lee: ‘UEFA Cup Squads Set In Stone’

Lee was bold when speaking to the Bolton News saying ‘it would have been remiss of me to have included him in the UEFA Cup squad when he could have gone elsewhere at a moments notice’ He continued ‘UEFA squads are set in stone once they are named and to have taken up one of the places with a player who might not have been here, would not have been in the club’s best interests’. That may be true but would it have been best to have named the Spaniard in the squad so he can be used to get in to the lucrative group stage, rather than not name him and risk getting dumped out of the competition.

La Liga: Real Madrid Relish Raul Resurgence

Three goals in four matches and all goals have been the moments that spurred the turnaround of the matches. Raul’s header against Atletico Madrid in the derby was reminiscent of all those scores of goals that he has been putting his signature on all his life. To prove that that wasn’t simply wasn’t a fluke, he scored in the very next week against Villarreal, this time he did so with a toepoke, again a trademark finish that has earned him his livelihood and on Tuesday poached a headed goal off a Ruud van Nistelrooy cross against visiting side Werder Bremen in the UEFA Champions League. The reinvention of Raul commenced last season when the suggestion that he was unearthing his old self from the ruins of the past gathered momentum and in the first couple of games in the new season, the conviction that he can do it has strengthened.

Capello Unearthed A Dormant Giant

The archaeological expedition commenced last season under Italian hard man Fabio Capello when he started getting on the scoresheet more frequently than he was wonted to in the twilight of the inevitably doomed galacticos era of Real Madrid and gradually he was reviving the years that witnessed him rise to the pedestal of the striker with the most frightening record in European football with 3 UEFA Champions League gold medals and 5 La Liga championship trophies. He scored 5 league goals and also added to his CV a decent number of goals in the Champions League. All suspicions of Raul getting heavy on his legs, losing his abiity and rapidly fading into footballing oblivion were ceased when under the strict disciplinarian Capello, he was constantly getting games even when he couldn’t contribute in terms of goals.

Recent Revival For Raul At Real

This season, Raul has started to roll back those golden years when he was rated as the arch goal poacher in Spain. The “King of Spain” has hit the back of the opposition net twice already in the opening two matches in La Liga and more importantly, the Spaniard has been contributing to Real’s game. Raul knows that this season, he would have to be doubly active and would have to look over his shoulder from time to time. Last season’s title triumph, which was in fact the first silverware that the club had managed to smuggle into its trophy cabinet in four years, kindled a wild spending spree in the transfer market in the summer. Javier Pedro Saviola has been signed on a free transfer, Gonzalo Higuain has exhibited considerable promise since his incorporation into the team in the January transfer window and Ruud van Nistelrooy, last season’s Pichichi winner, has to be the number one striker for the new Real manager Bernd Schuster. Raul knows that to keep his place in the first string, he has to watch his heels and more importantly watch where the opposition’s goal is.

That is exactly what he has done in the first five games this season for Madrid. He has absorbed a habit over the years of scoring against Real’s bitter cross-city rivals Atletico Madrid—the club that he was raised and nurtured at till he was 15 years old when the then Atletico President Jesus Gil decided to abolish the club’s entire youth system—and he continued the streak at the Bernabeu this season too. 1-0 down in the very first minute itself, then the vintage Raul header in the 15 minute from a Wesley Sneijder cross and the comeback was given the green light. In the next match it was Raul’s vision and schooling in the art of opportunism that created his goal against Villarreal at El Madrigal. An exquisite 45-yard through ball from man of the moment Sneijder and there was Raul, getting behind his marker and kissing the ball home.

Champions League Top Goal Scorer Raul

It was not his goal alone that stood out in that 5-0 mauling of Manuel Pellegrini’s side. Schuster decided to employ Raul as the main striker against Villarreal, a slot that has been, so far, reserved exclusively for van Nistelrooy who played as the second striker in the match. Raul has thrived on loose balls and chiseled passes all his career and he was doing so once more. Come this Tuesday and Raul’s favourite competition, the European Champions League: against Werder Bremen at the Bernabeu; Raul stole ahead of his marker in the 16th minute and placed his place at the right time and at the right place to add one more goal to his Champions League tally. Raul currently holds the record for most goals in the UEFA Champions League, Europe’s premier competition so far he has scored 57 and counting. His commitment and display was hailed by Marca and AS, the two highest selling daily sports papers in Madrid and suddenly, a marked swagger was noticeable in Raul’s steps and optimism is surging once more.

But Raul’s steps at the club have never been completely devoid of thorns; his rhythm at Real Madrid has twice been punctuated by desperate suggestions of him leaving the club. First in the middle of the 2004-2005 season when the Zidanes, Figos, Ronaldos et al were stubbornly draining down the hill and Raul promised to move away from the club should that help it in any way. Then last season, after a 1-0 defeat to Getafe in the opening few weeks of the season which Real goalkeeper Iker Casillas described as the worst game he has ever featured in for Real Madrid, Raul was reported to be considering a exit in the winter transfer period. But how could the club icon be let to depart? Raul stayed on and did play a significant role in bringing the Spanish league crown home; this season, he plans not only to successfully defend the Spanish championship trophy but also win the Champions League as well.

What Does The Future Hold For Raul?

At 30, Raul knows that the ruthless policy of Real Madrid of chopping off the old and worn out sentinels and recruiting new guards could turn its sword towards him pretty soon. But Raul also knows deep in his heart of hearts that he far from finished as a top-level striker in football. Greater things are anticipated from the man who rose from the humble San Cristobal de los Angeles neighbourhood of Madrid and became the talisman of the biggest and most successful club in history.

Defensive Confusion Costs Spurs A Clean Sheet

In the ensuing mix up Zlogar managed to toe-poke the ball through a gap in the defence. Radek Cerny who had little to do while deputizing for Paul Robinson, managed to get a hand to the shot but failed to stop it crossing the line.

Fabregas Forces First Goal For Gunners

They were gifted a first half goal by the visitors when a shot from Fabregas was deflected in to the goal. The young Spaniard will no doubt try to claim the goal to add to his already incredible tally for this season; he was instrumental both of the other Arsenal goals.

Eduardo Seals Victory

Robin Van Persie scored the Gunners second when he popped up at the back post to thump Sagna’s flick on from a Fabregas cross. Sevilla threatened on the counter attack, with ex-Spurs striker Fredi Kanoute coming closest to opening the account for Sevilla despite the perpetual booing from the home support. UEFA Champions League: Ronaldo Scores Header To Give Manchester United Win Over Sporting Lisbon

Manchester United visited Portugal knowing that their recent away form in the Premier League has not been of the standard of Champions. Sir Alex Ferguson was given a boost to his squad as England striker Wayne Rooney returned to fitness, news that would also be music to the ears of England manager Steve McClaren.

Cristiano Ronaldo Returns Home To Sporting Lisbon

Rooney managed to play for over seventy minutes before being replaced by Louis Saha. However it was the return of another prodigal son that helped United fly back to Manchester with all three points. Cristiano Ronaldo headed home the goal that was the difference between his old club and his current employer. Wes Brown provided the cross that Ronaldo guided home just after the hour mark.

Although Sporting Lisbon had more attempts on target they were not as threatening as the statistics read, although they did force Van Der Sar in to making some top class saves. United more specifically Ronaldo were more deadly with their attack, ensuring their perfect start to this seasons European campaign.
